Day 6 – Luzern to Lauterbrunnen

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

This morning’s drive was a quick 70 kilometers to a magnificent valley outside of Interlaken and deep into ski country. This is the valley of 72 waterfalls and the heart of Jungfrau area. We took a cable car up to Murren and a cog train to Wengen. To stand 5000 feet on a mountain side with alps at 14000 feet towering over you in every direction you is breathtaking. I had to stop and soak in the view of the valley, the village and the surrounding alps and all its grandeur.

The following photos cannot compare with what the eye can see. Nonetheless, this will give you some sense of this incredible location.

Day 5 – Lindau to Luzern

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Our day started with the German breakfast once again, of grain breads, cheeses, fruits, yoghurt, eggs, juices and coffee. The morning was cloudy and raining so we packed the car up after breakfast and headed out towards Luzern.

The drive was spectacular, taking a course through Austria into Switzerland and over the alps. Our first stop was a little truck stop on the lake Waldensee.

This was a screen shot from Goole Earth, just to give you a sense of location. The truck stop is at the bottom centre of the Picture. The following photos, were taken this morning at the lake.

Our next stop was a village, Linthal, high into the Alps. We stopped here for lunch and a rest from the mornings drive. While the others ate spinach, tomato, peppers and artichoke pizza, I had home made four cheese ravioli with a creamy pesto and shaved Parmesan. Delicious.

After lunch we continued up into the Alps into Altdorf. The roads rounds wound high into alps and some points it was only passable with single lane traffic. It was magnificent and majestic, and the pictures do nothing to the scale and the grandness of it all. To take in the scenery, and the feel, it should be experienced. The air was crisp, and the mountains were green and flowing with streams and waterfalls. Once we reached the peak it was covered in clouds and could barely see in front of you at some of the twists and turns in the road. The caps were covered in snow and at one point it was still snowing/raining. After the peak we wound back down into the villages below arriving at lake Luzern and into the city of Luzern. What a drive !!

After our arrival in Luzern, we took a walk around the lake and old town. We did have an unfortunate dinner of Raclette and Fondue. It was the worse meal we’ve had on this trip.
